The UK government provides a number of ways to assist families with the costs of childcare and the Childcare Choices website contains a lot of information about the schemes available. The website can be found by following the link below:
You may be able to get 30 hours of free childcare a week through the Free Childcare for Working Parents scheme.
Your child must be aged 9 months to 4 years old and you must live in England.
To be eligible for Free Childcare for Working Parents, you (and your partner, if you have one) need to both:
- be in work or about to start a new job
- earn over a certain amount
You’ll need a National Insurance number to apply.
You can apply for 30 hours of free childcare from when your child is 23 weeks old.
All 3 to 4-year-olds in England can get 570 free hours per year. It’s usually taken as 15 hours a week for 38 weeks of the year.
You can get it from the term after your child’s 3rd birthday, starting on 1 January, 1 April or 1 September.
Tax free childcare is an alternative to the childcare voucher system.
Essentially, if you meet the criteria (outlined on the childcare choices website) you can open an online account to pay for registered childcare. Through this account, the government will top-up any money you pay into the account (25%) up to a maximum of £2,000 per child per annum.
